The Friends Meeting House was demolished recently pending redevelopment of the site. Planning permission was given for the development of The Old Post Office site, despite considerable local opposition. On 23 March 2016, planning permission will be sought for a massive project involving demolition and redevelopment of the Eden Walk Shopping Centre. Strong opposition to this already been demonstrated by Kingston residents. Other building developments in Eden Street have been mooted.
If all these projects are allowed to run together, or overlap closely, road traffic chaos will ensue, and access to existing shops and businesses will be made even more difficult. Of more concern is a strong possibility that the local economy will be set back considerably for the duration of the works. Perhaps this will be irreversible in view of competition from other shopping centres, such as Croydon, which have already gone through a redevelopment phase and are ready for expansion.
This predicted scenario is another powerful reason for rejecting the Eden Walk proposal and provides an opportunity for RBK’s Council to state publicly how it intends to address the inevitable disruption of our Town.
