Subject: Kingston Direction of Travel Consultation
Dear Sirs
1. Do you agree with the proposed areas for selective growth in the Direction of Travel?
I do not want the ‘Development Areas of Opportunity” designation for Kingston.
If - and that is a big “if” - there is a need redevelop with higher densities - it would make sense to concentrate such development near to each transport link in the Borough.
2. Are there other areas in the borough we should identify for selective growth?
I do not want the “Development Areas of Opportunity” designation for Kingston.
The areas identified for selective growth are centered around rail links. But two obvious rail links have been overlooked: Surbiton; and Malden Manor. From a logical point of view, Surbiton and Malden Manor should be added to those areas identified for selective growth. That way the impact of growth can be more fairly and evenly spread across the borough.
3. Are there other areas in the borough that we should be seeking to protect and enhance?
We are not doing enough to protect the existing character and heritage of not only Kingston but Surbiton, new Malden & other parts of the Borough. It is highly ironic that the Council has in the last few months granted planning permission for several new very high rise & dense developments in Kingston town centre, which will neither enhance nor protect the listed Buildings & Conservation Areas close to those developments. Of course we want such protection & enhancement across the Borough, but any intensification resulting from “Areas of Opportunity” must be very carefully considered by Planning Officers & Councillors.
4. What key infrastructure do you think the borough needs to support its growing population?
I think helping to resolve problems with the one way system could be very good for Kingston Town Centre. I am yet to be convinced of the merits and practicality of the Tolworth ‘deck’ idea, but we acknowledge that something needs to be done to improve the divide between existing and future residents on either side of this part of the A3.A number of other infrastructure improvements have to be provided eg more School places ,more & better health centres, & other community facilities such as halls, resource centres,& better areas of open space properly managed.
