We should treasure our Market House

I write to appeal to you to reconsider your plans to change the use of our unique Market House.   There are so few such buildings along the Thames, and this structure sits in the very heart of Kingston.

It is time that you, as our local authority treated this town with the respect and recognition it deserves.   Not many of the towns along the length of the urban Thames have their town centre right on the riverside as we enjoy here in Kingston.   This treasure should be enhanced and used to promote Kingston’s unique qualities to a visiting public who come, not to drink and consume, but to enjoy this town’s setting.

There is no lack of other outlets for food and drink in the area, but there are few independent businesses left in the centre.   If the money spent promoting Kingston to the developers, was redirected to promoting the heritage aspects of Kingston, you would leave a much more worthy legacy when you retire from your posts in the Guildhall.    Take courage, be remembered for your brave stand against the  indistinguishable town centres that surround us.
